Rainbow Trout

Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, offers some surprisingly accessible rainbow trout fishing right in the heart of the Milwaukee metro area. The Menomonee River, which flows through the city, is regularly stocked with rainbows, offering anglers a convenient opportunity to target these beautiful fish. Spring and fall are prime times, as water temperatures are ideal and the stocking programs are in full swing. Look for deeper pools and runs, especially after rainfall. A great access point is along the Oak Leaf Trail, which parallels the river in many areas, offering easy wading access. Be aware that the Menomonee can be subject to urban runoff, so check water clarity before heading out. Also, the rainbows here tend to be relatively small, averaging 10-14 inches, but their willingness to take a fly or small spinner makes for exciting action. Consider using small nymphs or inline spinners to entice a strike.
