While West Baraboo isn't necessarily known as a rainbow trout mecca, the nearby Baraboo River and its tributaries offer some opportunities for anglers seeking these fish. The key is to target the smaller, spring-fed creeks that feed into the main river, as these tend to hold cooler water and support trout populations. Spring and fall, particularly after a rain event, are the most productive times. Focus on areas with undercut banks, overhanging vegetation, and riffle-pool sequences. A stealthy approach is crucial, as these trout can be easily spooked in the clear water. Consider using small dry flies or nymphs in sizes 16-20. Access to these creeks can be limited to road crossings and public lands, so be sure to research access points beforehand. The trout in these streams are typically wild and relatively small, averaging 8-12 inches, but their vibrant colors and feisty nature make for a rewarding fishing experience.
