Rainbow Trout

While Wisconsin Dells is better known for its brown trout streams, rainbow trout can also be found in some of the area's waterways, particularly those that are regularly stocked. Focus your efforts on the Wisconsin River below the dam and some of the larger creeks that receive stocking efforts. Spring and fall are the best times to target rainbows, with the spring offering the chance to intercept fish fresh from stocking. Check the Wisconsin DNR stocking reports to pinpoint locations with recent releases. A particularly useful tip is to fish the tailrace below the Kilbourn Dam; the turbulent water provides oxygen and food, attracting rainbows. Powerbait and small spinners are effective, but fly fishing with nymphs and streamers can also be productive. These stocked rainbows may not be the wariest fish, but they provide excellent sport and a tasty meal.
