Sand Tiger Shark
Fort Lauderdale's proximity to the Gulf Stream makes it a hotspot for numerous shark species, including the impressive sand tiger. Unlike some areas where they are primarily found offshore, you can target these sharks relatively close to shore here. The best time to target them is during the fall and winter months when water temperatures are cooler. Focus your attention on areas with structure like wrecks and reefs that hold baitfish. These sharks are ambush predators, so presenting your bait effectively is key. Try slow-trolling or drifting with live or cut bait, such as mullet or bluefish. The numerous inlets and channels around Fort Lauderdale provide access to deeper waters, but be aware of heavy boat traffic. Always practice responsible shark fishing techniques, including using circle hooks and de-hooking tools to minimize stress on the fish.
