Sheepshead

If you're after sheepshead in the Jacksonville area, think structure. These convict fish are notorious for congregating around docks, pilings, and bridges in the New River and Intracoastal Waterway. Spring and fall are generally the best times to target them, as they move inshore to spawn and feed. Fiddler crabs are the bait of choice, but barnacles and shrimp also work well. Presentation is crucial – you'll need a stout hook and a sensitive rod to detect their subtle bites. A Carolina rig or a jig head fished vertically near structure is a good starting point. Be patient and persistent, as sheepshead can be finicky eaters. A local tip: try fishing the docks around Sneads Ferry at low tide when the barnacles are exposed. Also, be mindful of the strong currents in the New River, which can affect your presentation.
