Sheepshead

Sheepshead are a quirky but rewarding target around Manteo, North Carolina. These bait-stealing bandits are often found around docks, bridges, and other submerged structures, feeding on barnacles and crustaceans. The best time to target them is during the warmer months, particularly spring and fall. Fiddler crabs are the bait of choice, presented on a small jig head or a Carolina rig. The key is to set the hook quickly at the slightest tap. A local hotspot is the old bridge rubble near the Washington Baum Bridge. Be prepared for a challenge; sheepshead are notorious for their subtle bites and ability to strip bait. Also, be aware of the strong currents around these structures, and use enough weight to keep your bait on the bottom.
