Southport is a Sheepshead angler's paradise, thanks to the abundance of structure in the form of docks, pilings, and rock jetties that these fish love. These 'convict fish' are available year-round, but the spring and fall months offer the most consistent action. Fiddler crabs are the bait of choice, and presenting them close to the structure is crucial. The Southport Waterfront provides excellent access to numerous docks and pilings, offering ample opportunity to target sheepshead. A helpful tip is to use a short, stout rod and heavy line to quickly pull the fish away from the structure once hooked. The sheepshead in this area are known for their impressive size, with many exceeding five pounds. Be prepared for a subtle bite, and set the hook quickly to avoid getting snagged on the structure. Also, be aware of the strong currents in the Cape Fear River and adjust your weight accordingly to keep your bait in the strike zone.
