Montauk, New York, famed for its striped bass and bluefish, also offers surprisingly good skate fishing. The waters surrounding Montauk Point, where the Atlantic meets the Block Island Sound, are home to a large skate population. They're abundant and relatively easy to catch, making them a fun target for anglers of all skill levels. The best time to target skate is during the warmer months, from late spring through fall. Many anglers encounter them while bottom fishing for fluke or sea bass. Try fishing with heavy tackle and circle hooks baited with squid, mackerel, or bunker. Several marinas in Montauk Harbor offer access to productive fishing grounds. For shore anglers, try fishing from the beaches on the south side of Montauk Point. Pro tip: skates often congregate around structure, so focus your efforts near wrecks and reefs. Be prepared for a strong fight, as skates can be surprisingly powerful, especially in the strong currents around Montauk.
