Smallmouth Bass

If you're looking for smallmouth bass in western Idaho, Council and the surrounding area can offer some exciting opportunities. The Weiser River, as well as sections of the Snake River accessible from Council, hold populations of these hard-fighting fish. Smallmouth here aren't known for their size, but for their willingness to strike and their scrappy attitude. The warmer months of summer and early fall are generally the most productive times to fish for smallmouth. They can often be found in rocky areas with current, such as riffles and runs. A local secret: try using crayfish imitations along the bottom, as this is a staple food source for smallmouth in this region. Access to the rivers can sometimes be limited, so research public access points beforehand. Be aware of river flows and water levels, as conditions can change rapidly, especially after rainfall. Expect smaller sized fish, but a fun day of fishing nonetheless.
