Smallmouth Bass

Greenville, Michigan, while perhaps better known for pike, also holds some respectable Smallmouth Bass fishing. The key is targeting the right areas within the Flat River and surrounding lakes. Look for rocky structures, current breaks, and submerged wood – these are smallmouth magnets. The Flat River offers wadeable sections where you can cast to likely holding spots. Lincoln Lake and Baldwin Lake also hold smallmouth around docks and rocky points. Early summer, after the spawn, and fall are prime times. The smallmouth are often chasing crayfish, so crankbaits and jigs that imitate them are effective. A local tip: the stretch of the Flat River near Greenville's downtown area can be surprisingly productive, especially in the early morning or late evening. Also, be aware of fluctuating water levels in the river, which can impact fishing conditions.
