Smallmouth Bass

If you're after hard-fighting smallmouth bass, Roscommon, Michigan, provides access to several excellent fisheries. Houghton Lake, Michigan's largest inland lake, holds a healthy population of smallmouth. The Muskegon River, flowing nearby, is another great option, offering a different riverine experience. For Houghton Lake, focus on rocky points, drop-offs, and areas with submerged vegetation. Tube baits, crankbaits, and topwater lures are effective choices. The Muskegon River favors faster presentations like spinnerbaits and crankbaits, especially around current breaks and rocky structures. Late spring and early summer, after the spawn, are prime times for targeting smallmouth, as they aggressively feed to recover. A helpful tip: Houghton Lake can get choppy, so be mindful of weather conditions. The DNR launch site on the lake's south end is a popular access point. Remember to practice catch and release to help maintain the quality of the smallmouth bass fishery in the Roscommon area.
