Northern Pike

Roscommon County is a fantastic destination for anglers chasing Northern Pike. Houghton Lake, with its expansive weed beds and shallow bays, is a haven for these ambush predators. Higgins Lake, known for its clarity, also holds a good population of pike, often found cruising the edges of deep weed lines. Spring, just after ice-out, is an excellent time to target pike in the shallows as they spawn. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and jerkbaits are effective lures. Fall is another productive period as pike feed heavily before winter. For a different experience, try targeting pike in the Muskegon River, where they often lurk near fallen timber and current breaks. Local tip: Be prepared with wire leaders to prevent bite-offs, and consider using a landing net large enough to handle these toothy fish. The DNR boat launch on the north end of Houghton Lake provides easy access to prime pike habitat. Respect other anglers and boaters while navigating these popular waters.
