While Englishtown isn't renowned for its smallmouth bass fishing, determined anglers can find some limited opportunities within a reasonable drive. The Raritan River, particularly the South Branch, holds a small population of smallmouth bass. While not abundant, the fish that are there can be surprisingly feisty. Focus your efforts on rocky areas, riffles, and deeper pools. Late spring and early fall are the best times to target smallmouth bass, as they are more active in cooler water. Try using small crankbaits, tubes, or jigs that mimic the local forage. Wading can be a good option in some sections of the river, but be mindful of water levels and slippery rocks. A key tip is to look for areas where the river narrows or has some kind of obstruction, as these often concentrate the fish. Be aware that the smallmouth population in this area is not as robust as in other parts of the state, so practice catch and release to help protect the fishery.
