While not known as a smallmouth bass mecca, the rivers near Kenilworth, New Jersey, do hold some surprisingly feisty bronzebacks. Focus your efforts on the Rahway River, particularly the stretches with rocky bottoms and riffles. These areas provide the current and cover that smallmouth prefer. Late spring and early fall are typically the best times to target them, as the water temperatures are moderate and the fish are actively feeding. Wading is a popular way to fish the Rahway, but be cautious of slippery rocks and changing water levels. Light spinning tackle with small crankbaits, tubes, or spinners can be very effective. Don't overlook topwater lures during the low-light hours. Public access points are available at several parks along the river, but check local regulations regarding fishing licenses and any specific restrictions. The smallmouth in this area generally range from 1 to 3 pounds, but occasionally you'll hook into a larger fish. Be prepared for a good fight in the swift current!
