While Neptune City itself isn't a smallmouth bass mecca, anglers willing to travel slightly inland can find some action. Focus your efforts on the upper reaches of the Manasquan River. While primarily known for its saltwater fishing closer to the coast, the freshwater sections further upstream hold a population of smallmouth bass. Spring and fall are the most productive times, as the water temperatures are more favorable. Look for rocky areas, submerged logs, and current breaks. Small crankbaits, tubes, and jigs are effective lures. Access can be limited, so look for bridge crossings and road access points where you can safely park and fish. A local tip is to focus on the area near Howell Township, where the river has more defined structure. The smallmouth in this area are not particularly large, but they are feisty and provide fun action on light tackle. Be prepared for some hiking and exploring to find the best spots.
