While Pitman, NJ, isn't typically known as a smallmouth bass hotspot, you *can* find them in certain areas, particularly in the deeper sections of the local rivers and streams like the Mantua Creek. The challenge is finding them amongst the more prevalent largemouth. Focus on areas with rocky bottoms, deeper pools, and current breaks, as these provide the preferred habitat for smallmouth. Spring and fall are, as usual, the most productive times. Try using small crankbaits or tubes to entice a strike. Access can be limited, so scouting for accessible bank fishing spots or using a kayak is recommended. Be aware that the smallmouth population is relatively small, so catch and release is encouraged to help maintain the fishery.
