Smallmouth Bass

The Monongahela River near Bentleyville offers solid Smallmouth Bass fishing, particularly in the warmer months. Look for rocky structure, submerged timber, and current breaks – these are smallmouth magnets. Late spring (May-June) and early fall (September-October) are arguably the best times to target them, as the fish are actively feeding before and after the summer heat. Topwater lures, crankbaits, and tube jigs are local favorites. The river can be accessed from several public boat launches around Bentleyville, including the one near the Route 40 bridge. Be aware of river conditions, especially after heavy rainfall, as the Monongahela can become turbid and swift. Local smallmouth are known for their aggressive strikes and hard fighting, so be sure to use appropriate tackle. Don't overlook the mouths of smaller creeks entering the river, as these areas often concentrate baitfish and, consequently, smallmouth.
