For Smallmouth Bass enthusiasts, Sturgeon Bay is a true gem. The bay's rocky shorelines, plentiful reefs, and clear water create ideal habitat for these hard-fighting fish. Summer is typically the best time to target Smallmouth, as they become more active in the warmer water. Look for them around docks, submerged timber, and rocky points. Topwater lures, crankbaits, and tubes are all effective presentations. Consider using a drop-shot rig when the fish are holding deeper. A crucial piece of local knowledge is that the Smallmouth here can be incredibly structure-oriented; finding the right rock pile or weed bed can make all the difference. Launching from Sawyer Park or Potawatomi State Park provides access to excellent Smallmouth fishing, but be mindful of the wind, as it can pick up quickly on the bay.
