While not the first species that comes to mind in southwestern Wyoming, smallmouth bass can be found in the Flaming Gorge Reservoir, a reasonable drive from Diamondville. This massive reservoir offers a unique smallmouth bass fishery, with rocky shorelines and submerged structure that provide excellent habitat. The peak season is typically late spring through early fall, as the water warms and the bass become more active. A good strategy is to focus on rocky points, ledges, and submerged timber using crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and jigs. Smallmouth in Flaming Gorge are known for their aggressive strikes and powerful fights. Boat access is almost essential to effectively fish Flaming Gorge. There are several boat ramps around the reservoir, but be sure to check their operating status and water levels before your trip.
