Smallmouth bass fishing in the Thermopolis area centers around the Bighorn River. While not as renowned as some other Wyoming smallmouth locations, the Bighorn does hold a healthy population of these hard-fighting fish. The stretch of river below Boysen Reservoir, with its rocky structure and riffles, is prime smallmouth habitat. Focus your efforts from late spring through early fall (May-October), when water temperatures are favorable. Smallmouth here tend to be opportunistic feeders, so a variety of lures can be effective. Crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and tube jigs are all worth trying. Fly fishing with streamers can also produce results. Access can be a bit challenging in some areas, but there are several public access points along the river, including near the town of Thermopolis and downstream towards Worland. Be aware of changing water levels due to dam releases, which can impact fishing conditions. The smallmouth in the Bighorn average 1-3 pounds, with the occasional larger fish.
