Lake DeSmet, while massive and sometimes windswept, also holds a healthy population of smallmouth. The warmer months, from late spring through early fall, are prime time. Smallmouth become more active as the water warms up. Early mornings and late evenings often produce the best bites. A local tip: Pay attention to water levels in the Tongue River. When releases from the dams are high, the fishing can be tougher, but when the water stabilizes, the smallmouth tend to be more concentrated. Also, consider using crayfish-imitation lures, as these are a staple of their diet in this region.
