Snakehead

Baltimore offers some surprisingly good snakehead fishing opportunities, particularly in the tidal tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay. The Gunpowder River, Middle River, and Back River are local hotspots known for holding decent populations of these invasive predators. Spring and early summer, when the snakeheads are spawning, are prime times to target them. Look for them in shallow, weedy areas where they guard their nests. Topwater frogs and weedless swimbaits are highly effective this time of year. As the water cools in the fall, snakeheads tend to move towards slightly deeper water near creek mouths and channels. A practical tip for Baltimore anglers is to access these areas by kayak or small boat, as shoreline access can be limited in some locations. Be aware of changing tidal conditions, as snakeheads often become more active during periods of moving water. The snakeheads in the Baltimore area can reach impressive sizes, with many fish exceeding 8 pounds, so be prepared for a good fight!
