Snakehead

While Annapolis may be better known for its striped bass fishing, the invasive snakehead has established itself in the tidal waters of the Chesapeake Bay watershed, offering a unique angling opportunity. These aggressive predators thrive in the weedy, shallow areas of rivers and creeks that flow into the bay. The best time to target snakeheads is during the warmer months, from late spring through early fall, when they are most active and spawning. Look for them around submerged vegetation, lily pads, and fallen trees. Topwater lures, such as frogs and buzzbaits, are highly effective, as are swimbaits and spinnerbaits. The Severn River, Magothy River, and the Blackwater River on the Eastern Shore are known hotspots. Access is readily available from numerous public boat ramps and shoreline access points. Local tip: focus on areas with heavy cover and low, slow-moving water. Snakeheads are ambush predators and will often strike aggressively. Be prepared for a strong fight! Their population is steadily growing, presenting both challenges and opportunities for anglers.
