Weakfish

Weakfish, once a prominent species in the Chesapeake Bay, are making a slow comeback, offering anglers a chance at a prized catch near Annapolis. These fish are most active during the spring and fall migrations, following schools of baitfish. Look for them in the shallower, brackish waters of the bay, particularly around grass beds, tidal creeks, and channel edges. The Severn and South Rivers can be productive areas. Light tackle is key, as weakfish have delicate mouths. Small jigs, soft plastic lures, and live shrimp or bloodworms are effective baits. A slow, steady retrieve is often more successful than aggressive jigging. Pay attention to water clarity, as weakfish prefer clearer conditions. Consider fishing during the early morning or late evening hours when the light is low. Public access points along the rivers offer opportunities for both shoreline and boat fishing. Remember to handle weakfish carefully to ensure their survival if you practice catch and release.
