Spanish Mackerel

Destin is a fantastic destination for Spanish mackerel, offering easy access to productive fishing grounds. Like elsewhere in Florida, focusing on seasonal forage and water conditions is crucial. Spanish mackerel are prevalent from spring through fall as they chase baitfish schools. Target them around the Destin East Pass, near the jetties, and along the beaches. Trolling small spoons or casting Got-cha plugs and other flashy lures are effective techniques. Pay close attention to water clarity and temperature. Clearer water often calls for smaller lures and lighter leaders. The current in the pass can be strong, so adjust your lure weight accordingly. As previously mentioned, natural presentations are key. Also, look for diving birds, which indicate feeding activity. Remember to use a wire leader to prevent bite-offs, as Spanish mackerel have sharp teeth.
