Chasing Spanish Mackerel in Tampa Bay offers some exciting action, especially when the bait schools show up. These speedsters are drawn to the area's rich forage, making the waters around the shipping channel and the edges of the bay particularly productive. The best time to target them is during the spring and fall migrations when water temperatures are moderate and the baitfish are plentiful. Look for birds diving, a telltale sign of mackerel feeding below. A local tip: access the eastern side of the bay via the Courtney Campbell Causeway for wade fishing or launching a small boat. When the mackerel are thick, a simple silver spoon or white baitfish imitation retrieved at high speed is deadly. Remember to use a wire leader as their sharp teeth can easily slice through monofilament. Keep an eye on water clarity; mackerel prefer clearer water, so adjust your location accordingly.
