For some high-speed action, consider targeting Spanish mackerel in the waters off Savannah. These sleek, toothy predators are a blast to catch on light tackle. Spanish mackerel are typically found in the nearshore waters during the warmer months, from late spring through early fall. Look for them around schools of baitfish, often near inlets and artificial reefs. Trolling small spoons or tube lures behind a fast-moving boat is a highly effective technique. Casting to surface feeding frenzies with flashy lures can also produce exciting results. The waters around the Savannah River entrance can be very productive. Remember to use a wire leader to prevent bite-offs, as Spanish mackerel have sharp teeth. Keep an eye out for diving birds, which often indicate the presence of baitfish and mackerel.
