Flounder

Savannah's estuarine environment is prime habitat for flounder, particularly the southern flounder. These flatfish are ambush predators, lying in wait on the bottom for unsuspecting prey. The best time to target flounder is during the spring and fall as they migrate inshore and offshore, respectively. Focus your efforts around structure such as docks, oyster bars, and creek mouths. A Carolina rig with a live mud minnow or shrimp is a highly effective presentation. Slowly drag the bait along the bottom, pausing occasionally to entice a strike. The South Channel is a popular area to target flounder, but be aware of strong currents. For wade fishing, try the flats around Tybee Island during low tide. Remember to use polarized sunglasses to spot flounder on the bottom.
