Spiny Dogfish
Destin, Florida, while renowned for its beautiful beaches and inshore fishing, offers less common opportunities for spiny dogfish. These small sharks aren't a primary target in the area, but they can occasionally be found in the deeper waters of the Gulf of Mexico, particularly during the cooler months (December-March). If you're determined to target them, focus your efforts around offshore reefs, wrecks, and artificial structures where they might congregate. Bottom fishing with cut bait is the most effective technique. A practical tip is to check with local charter operators about recent catches and areas where dogfish have been reported. The Destin Harbor is a hub for charter fishing, and experienced captains can provide valuable insights. Be aware that the focus in Destin is typically on larger game fish, so you may need to specifically request to target bottom-dwelling species. The dogfish population here is likely transient, following temperature changes and prey availability.
