Spiny Dogfish
While Miami isn't typically known as a spiny dogfish hotspot, these small sharks are present in the deeper waters off the coast. Targeting them specifically can be a fun and accessible option, particularly during the winter months (December-March) when water temperatures are cooler. Dogfish tend to congregate in areas with deeper water and structure, so focus your efforts around reefs and ledges offshore. Charter boats are readily available from marinas like Miami Beach Marina and can provide the expertise and equipment needed to reach productive fishing grounds. A helpful tip is to use wire leaders to prevent bite-offs, as dogfish have sharp teeth. While these sharks aren't a primary target for most anglers in Miami, they can offer a consistent bite and are a good option for introducing beginners to saltwater fishing. The dogfish population here is similar to others along the Atlantic coast, generally smaller in size than some larger shark species.
