Spotted Bass

While not as common as largemouth, spotted bass can be found in Diamondhead's freshwater canal system and interconnected lakes. These feisty fish prefer slightly deeper water and areas with more current than largemouth, so focus your efforts around bridge pilings, canal junctions, and any areas where the water flows more swiftly. Spring and fall are the best times to target them, as they become more active during these periods. A Carolina-rigged worm or a crankbait that dives a bit deeper can be effective presentations. Local tip: Many anglers overlook the spotted bass in favor of largemouth, so you might find less fishing pressure. Access is generally good from various points around Diamondhead, but be mindful of private property. The spotted bass here tend to be aggressive and can provide a fun fight on light tackle. They're generally smaller than largemouth, but a two-pounder is a respectable catch. Experiment with different lure retrieves to find what the fish are responding to on any given day.
