Spotted Bass

Spotted bass, sometimes called Kentucky bass, can be found in the waterways around Montrose, Mississippi, offering a fun change of pace from largemouth fishing. The Chickasawhay River is again a primary target. Spotted bass tend to prefer slightly faster-moving water than largemouth, so focus on areas with current. Rocky areas and creek confluences are prime spots. Spring and fall are ideal times to fish for spotted bass, as they become more active with the changing water temperatures. Small crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and jigs are effective lures. A local tactic is to fish upstream, casting towards cover and working your lure back with the current. Access along the Chickasawhay is mainly limited to a few bridge crossings and private land, so be sure to respect property lines. The spotted bass in this area tend to be smaller than largemouth, but they are aggressive fighters and can provide plenty of action.
