New Augusta provides a solid jumping-off point for targeting spotted bass, also known as Kentucky bass, in the rivers of southern Mississippi. The Chickasawhay and Leaf Rivers are your best bets. These rivers feature plenty of rocky structure, submerged timber, and clear water stretches that spotted bass love. Spring and fall are prime times to fish for them, as they become more active during these periods. Focus your efforts around rocky shoals, submerged logs, and any current breaks. Lighter tackle is recommended, as spotted bass typically don't reach the same size as largemouth. Small crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and soft plastics are all effective choices. For bank access, explore areas near bridge crossings and public access points along the rivers. Remember to check water levels, as these rivers can fluctuate quickly after rainfall. The spotted bass in this region are known for their aggressive strikes, making for exciting fishing.
