Striped Bass

While not as widely known as some other Mississippi locations, New Augusta offers a unique opportunity to target striped bass in a freshwater environment. The Chickasawhay River, accessible near New Augusta, holds a population of landlocked stripers. These fish likely originated from stocking efforts further downstream and have adapted to the river's conditions. The best time to target them is during the cooler months, from late fall through early spring, when the water temperatures drop and the stripers become more active. Look for them near creek mouths, rocky shoals, and areas with current. Trolling crankbaits or casting swimbaits can be effective techniques. Access to the river can be found at various bridge crossings and public access points, but be sure to check local regulations regarding boat launches and fishing permits. Remember that these are a unique population of stripers in a freshwater setting, so handle them with care if you plan to release them.
