Spotted Bass

While Exeter, Nebraska isn't nationally known for its spotted bass, savvy anglers know that the local freshwater creeks and small reservoirs can hold some surprises. Spotted bass aren't native to Nebraska, so consider them a bonus catch when targeting other species. Focus your efforts in the spring, particularly during the pre-spawn and spawn (late April to early June), when the water temperatures start to rise. They'll be more active and closer to the shallows. Look for rocky areas, submerged timber, and creek inlets that provide cover and warmer water. A key local tip: many of the smaller reservoirs are on private land, so always secure permission before fishing. Also, be aware that the spotted bass population is relatively small, so practice catch and release to help maintain the fishery. Standard bass lures like crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and soft plastics can be effective, but downsizing your presentation might be necessary to entice bites from these smaller populations.
