Spotted Bass

While Nebraska isn't necessarily known as a Spotted Bass mecca, you can find some surprisingly good fishing for them near Boys Town. Focus your efforts on the smaller, less pressured creeks and tributaries that feed into the larger Platte River system. These fish are often overlooked, leading to a less competitive environment. Spring, particularly pre-spawn (late April-May), is prime time as the water warms and they move into shallower areas to feed. Small crankbaits, jigs, and even live minnows fished near submerged structure or rocky banks can be very effective. A key to success here is stealth – these Spotted Bass can be skittish. Public access can be limited, so be sure to check local regulations and obtain permission where necessary. One often overlooked access point is the smaller bridges crossing these creeks; you can often fish from the bank nearby.
