Spotted Bass

While Montauk is renowned for its saltwater fishing, targeting spotted bass requires a shift in focus to the freshwater ponds and lakes dotted around Long Island. Unlike their saltwater counterparts, spotted bass in this region are a freshwater species also known as Kentucky Bass. These fish aren't native but have established populations in some areas. Fort Pond and Montauk Lake are good places to start. Spring and fall are the prime times to target them, as they become more active with the cooler water temperatures. Small crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and plastic worms are effective lures. Try fishing around structure like fallen trees, docks, and weed beds. Access to some of these ponds can be limited, so check local regulations and obtain any necessary permits. The spotted bass here are generally smaller than largemouth bass, but they can put up a good fight on light tackle.
