Steelhead

Steelhead fishing around Marquette demands respect for the Great Lakes and its tributaries. The fall and spring see the strongest runs as steelhead migrate into rivers like the Carp, Chocolay, and Dead River. These fish are here to spawn. These rivers offer classic steelhead runs, but Lake Superior's influence keeps water temperatures cold, extending the season. Focus on tributaries after rainfall, as this can trigger a fresh run of fish. Egg patterns, nymphs, and small spoons are standard fare. A productive tactic is to drift fish these offerings through deeper runs and pools. Access to the Carp River is relatively easy via county roads, but be prepared for some wading. A word to the wise: Lake Superior steelhead can be exceptionally strong, so ensure your gear is up to the challenge. Respect private property when accessing river access points.
