Petoskey offers some excellent Steelhead fishing opportunities, especially in the area's rivers and Lake Michigan tributaries. The fall and spring are prime times to target these migratory rainbow trout as they make their way upstream to spawn. The Bear River is a popular spot, with anglers using a variety of techniques, including fly fishing with nymphs and streamers, drifting beads, or casting small spinners and spoons. Lake Michigan itself can also hold Steelhead, especially during the warmer months. Trolling with spoons or crankbaits near river mouths can be effective. Be aware that Steelhead can be challenging to catch, requiring patience and persistence.
