Stingray

Montauk, New York, while better known for its striped bass and bluefish, also provides opportunities to target stingrays. These creatures frequent the area's bays and inlets during the warmer summer months, seeking out the warmer water and abundant food sources. Shinnecock Bay, just west of Montauk, can be particularly productive. Look for them in areas with sandy or muddy bottoms, where they bury themselves to ambush prey. A good strategy is to fish near the inlets and channels where tides create strong currents. A local tip: many anglers have success using clams or squid as bait, fished on the bottom with a fish finder rig. Be mindful of the strong currents and boat traffic in these areas. Montauk's stingrays are generally smaller than those found further south, but they still offer a challenging and rewarding fishing experience.
