Striped Bass

Seminary, Mississippi, isn't the first place that comes to mind for striped bass, but the Leaf River and its tributaries offer a unique, if challenging, opportunity. While not teeming with stripers like some larger impoundments, the Leaf does hold a population of these hard-fighting fish, particularly in the deeper holes and around structure. Spring and fall are your best bets; the stripers become more active as water temperatures moderate. Focus your efforts after periods of heavy rain when the river is up and slightly stained, as this can trigger feeding activity. Access can be tricky; look for bridge crossings and public access points, but be prepared for some walking. Local tip: target the areas around the Highway 590 bridge; it's a known spot. Be aware that striped bass in this system are likely to be smaller, often in the 2-5 pound range, but the thrill of catching one in a smaller river system is well worth the effort.
