Tautog

Tautog, also known as blackfish, provide a challenging and rewarding fishing experience near Gloucester Point. These fish are masters of structure, inhabiting rocky bottoms, pilings, and wrecks in the Chesapeake Bay. The peak season is typically fall and winter, when they move inshore to spawn. Use heavy tackle and stout hooks, as tautog are powerful fighters and can quickly break you off in the rocks. Fiddler crabs and green crabs are their preferred baits. A productive spot is around the pilings of the Coleman Bridge, but be prepared for snagging. A local's trick is to use just enough weight to hold bottom, minimizing the chance of getting stuck. Tautog fishing requires patience and precision, but the reward of a big tog is well worth the effort. Access can be tricky without a boat, so consider chartering a trip if you're new to the area.
