Tautog

Tautog, or blackfish, fishing near Port Republic requires a bit of a trek towards the Chesapeake Bay. While Port Republic itself is inland, it's a reasonable drive to prime tautog habitat. These fish are masters of structure, so focus on rocky bottoms, wrecks, and bridge pilings. The late fall and winter months are the peak season when water temperatures drop. Fishing for tautog requires stout tackle and strong hooks, as they are powerful fighters and live in snag-filled environments. Green crabs are the bait of choice, but clams and mussels can also be effective. A common rig is a simple bottom rig with a heavy sinker to hold bottom in the current. Be patient and persistent, as tautog fishing can be challenging but rewarding. Before heading out, check the marine forecast, as conditions in the Chesapeake Bay can change rapidly.
