Walleye

Cicero, Illinois, might not be the first place that comes to mind for walleye fishing, but the nearby Illinois River and its connected waterways offer surprisingly good opportunities. While Lake Michigan gets more press, the riverine walleye fishery can be productive, especially during the spring and fall spawning runs. Focus your efforts around structure like bridge pilings, submerged timber, and rocky points. Spring (March-May) is prime time as walleye migrate upstream to spawn, and again in the fall (September-November) as they fatten up for winter. For bank access, try areas along the Des Plaines River near Lyons, just west of Cicero. Boat access is available at several public ramps along the Illinois River, though be prepared for moderate boat traffic, especially on weekends. A key local tip: pay attention to water clarity. Walleye are light-sensitive, so slightly stained or murky water often holds more fish than crystal-clear conditions. Use jigs tipped with minnows or plastics, and vary your retrieve until you find what the fish are hitting.
