Northern Pike

While not as abundant as in more northern regions, Northern Pike can be found in the Chicago area waterways near Cicero, Illinois. The Chicago River system and its connected canals and lagoons offer the best shot at encountering these toothy predators. Look for pike around weedy areas, submerged timber, and near current breaks. Spring, just after ice-out, and fall, as water temperatures cool, are the most productive times to target pike. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are classic pike lures. Don't be afraid to use oversized lures, as pike are aggressive feeders. A steel leader is essential to prevent bite-offs. A local tip is to focus on areas near the confluence of different waterways, as pike often congregate in these areas. Public access is available along sections of the Chicago River, but be prepared for urban conditions. Be aware of potential hazards like boat traffic and submerged debris. Pike in this area tend to be opportunistic feeders, so experiment with different lure retrieves and presentations to find what works best on a given day.
