Walleye

Walleye fishing near Lake in the Hills centers primarily around the Fox River and the Chain O'Lakes system. While not a walleye mecca, these waters hold a decent population that can provide a rewarding challenge. Spring and fall are the peak seasons, with walleye congregating in areas with current and structure as they prepare to spawn or feed heavily before winter. Jigging with minnows or plastics around bridge pilings, rocky points, and submerged timber is a proven technique. The Fox River near Algonquin and McHenry can be particularly productive. A local tip: try trolling crankbaits along deeper channels and drop-offs. Walleye in this region tend to be opportunistic feeders, so experiment with different lure colors and presentations. Be aware of boat traffic on the Chain O'Lakes, especially during weekends.
