Walleye

Walleye enthusiasts might be surprised to find fishable populations near West Plains, Missouri. While not as prominent as bass or crappie, Walleye can be found in some of the larger reservoirs in the region, most notably Norfork Lake and Bull Shoals Lake (again, mostly in Arkansas but accessible from Missouri). These deep, clear lakes provide the structure and forage that Walleye need. The pre-spawn period in early spring (late February-April) and the fall months are the most productive times to target them. Focus on rocky points, submerged humps, and areas near the dam. Trolling crankbaits or jigging with minnows are popular techniques. Local anglers often have success using nightcrawlers on a jig head. Keep in mind that Walleye are light-sensitive, so fishing at dawn, dusk, or on overcast days can significantly increase your chances. Be sure to check local regulations regarding size and creel limits, as they can vary.
