Rainbow Trout

For a taste of Ozark trout fishing, West Plains, Missouri, offers access to some surprisingly productive rainbow trout waters. While not a classic tailwater fishery, the spring-fed streams and rivers in the surrounding area, like portions of the North Fork River and some of its tributaries, are stocked regularly, providing ample opportunities for anglers. Spring and fall are prime times, with cooler water temperatures leading to more active fish. Early mornings and late evenings are generally best, especially during the warmer months. A great access point is the Missouri Department of Conservation's access on the North Fork, offering both bank fishing and boat launching. Keep an eye on water levels, as these streams can fluctuate rapidly after rainfall. Local trout tend to be opportunistic feeders, so a mix of small spinners, worms, and trout magnets can be effective. Don't be afraid to experiment with different presentations until you find what the trout are biting on that day.
