Walleye

While Philipsburg isn't the first place that comes to mind for Montana walleye, anglers in the know head to nearby Georgetown Lake for some surprisingly good fishing. This high-elevation lake offers a unique walleye fishery, as the fish have to adapt to colder temperatures and a shorter growing season. The walleye here tend to be a bit smaller on average compared to those in eastern Montana reservoirs, but they are scrappy fighters and the scenery is unmatched. Late spring and early summer (May-June) after ice-off is prime time, as the walleye move into shallower water to spawn. Trolling crankbaits or jigs along the rocky shorelines can be very effective. Another good time is late summer/early fall as the fish feed up before winter. A local tip: pay attention to wind direction, as it can quickly churn up the lake and make fishing difficult. The Forest Service maintains several access points and boat ramps around the lake, but be prepared for crowds on weekends during peak season.
