White Bass

Kingman, Arizona, might not be the first place that springs to mind for white bass, but Lake Mohave, a short drive away, offers surprisingly good action. Spring is prime time, as the whites school up to spawn in the northern coves and river inlets of the lake. Look for them near structure like submerged trees or rocky points. Trolling crankbaits or casting small jigs and spinners can be very effective. A local tip: Pay attention to the water level, as fluctuating levels can concentrate fish around newly submerged vegetation. Also, be mindful of the wind; Mohave can get choppy quickly. While the white bass here may not reach trophy sizes, the sheer numbers can make for an exciting day on the water. Anglers often report success near the Katherine Landing area. Expect a healthy population, and practice catch and release to help maintain the fishery.
